Artist's Description
I painted this picture outdoors on a crisp fall day. Me and eleven other artists were enjoying the 2011 Plein Air Artist Retreat on Gregg Caudell�s ranch up the San Poil River valley. This is a huge rock which fell off Coyote Mountain that looms over this edge of Gregg�s ranch along this part of the San Poil river. Such rocks are known as �erratics� when found in the wheat fields of Lincoln County just south of the Columbia River into which the San Poil flows. The landscape in this area was scoured by hundreds of massive floods that carried such huge boulders in glacial ice when the Missoula Ice Dam would break every so many thousands of years. In hours everything in this area was drowned in tons of water. This boulder is about ten feet tall and at least that wide.

I began working as an artist at the age of two. Unable to resist the siren's call of a large canvas. The newly papered dining room was just screaming for a rainbow band of color about three feet up the wall. So I opened my box of crayons, pressed their tips firmly against the unblemished wallpaper and ran around the room as fast as I could, as many times as I could. I sensed that my work may not be appreciated. It wasn't. But it looked great! It took some time before my parents recognized my talent but I kept working with every medium available. Eventually they took me to study under two local artists recognized as some of Victoria BC's finest painters. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. My work won First Prizes in the...
