This was painted sitting under a huge river willow beside the Yakima River. I was spending a week plein air painting with friends during the Cle Elum Plein Air Festival and this was one of my paintings. Done completely on site, this is considered pure plein air, as opposed to plein air sketches that are finished in the studio later. The raw on site plein air watercolors have a vibrant, daring, exciting feeling to them. I think this is a direct result of the experience of painting outdoors and all it's constraints. Plein air forces the artist to a higher level of discussion with their muse!
I began working as an artist at the age of two. Unable to resist the siren's call of a large canvas. The newly papered dining room was just screaming for a rainbow band of color about three feet up the wall. So I opened my box of crayons, pressed their tips firmly against the unblemished wallpaper and ran around the room as fast as I could, as many times as I could. I sensed that my work may not be appreciated. It wasn't. But it looked great! It took some time before my parents recognized my talent but I kept working with every medium available.
